Small Business Saturday is right around the corner, so that means now is the time to start getting ready to take advantage of the day where consumers everywhere are inspired to “shop small!”
What is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 in an effort to support local businesses, boost local economies, drive more jobs, and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it’s the day to rally the nation to support small businesses like yours and kick start the busy holiday shopping season.
What is Shop Small?
While Small Business Saturday is an important day kicking off the holiday season, the Shop Small Movement is ongoing. Throughout the year, Shop Small is used as a way to celebrate small businesses and the neighborhoods they’re in.
Why get involved?
Since it’s inception, Small Business Saturday has quickly become a huge revenue driver for local businesses during the busy holiday season. The truth is in the numbers:
- In 2014, 88 million consumers shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday–that’s 1 out of every 4 Americans–and spent an estimated $14.3 billion that day!
- More than two-thirds of the U.S. population are aware of Small Business Saturday (67%).
- Last year, more than 3,000 local groups hosted Small Business Saturday events encouraging local consumers to shop small.
With the entire nation rallying behind this day, why not get involved? As a small business owner you can appreciate the value in amping up attention for your business. Being a part of a powerful movement that supports businesses like yours isn’t just a passing fad–it’s a movement that is proven to be worthwhile.
How can you get involved?
Help inspire consumers in your community to shop at local. From hosting an in-store event to decorating your shop on the day, there are tons of ways to get involved. Here are some quick tips to get started:
- Plan something special. Whether a promotion, sale, event , sweepstakes or added gift for doing business with you (e.g. special food or treat), offer up something that will attract consumers and get them spending with you.
- Take advantage of tools. There are tons of free, customizable marketing materials available to you at Shop Small–including banner ads, printable signage and save the date cards, email templates, social posts, Shop Small logos, event guides, tips for rallying your community and more!
- Get the word out. Now that you have your little something special all planned, promote it! Send out emails to current and past customers, post to your blog, update your website and get the word out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
- Partner with other businesses. Get your community together and collaborate on how to cross promote eachother’s businesses with special upsell offers. Also, check to see if your community has a Neighborhood Champion (responsible for rallying their community and organizing events) and see how you can get involved.
- Use social media. Take advantage of trending hashtags to get the word out about your special promotions/events, such as #shopsmall and #smallbizsat.
